Beyond the Visible - Infrared Imaging for Museums

چکیده
This paper presents results of new approaches to imaging, specifically utilizing techniques developed by NASA for spacecraft missions to other solar system bodies. Results from a month long field project in Jerusalem in June-July 1994 demonstrate the usefblness of the new techniques on inscribed soft media and ostraca. The imaging approach is effective and usehl on frescoes, mosaics, ink inscriptions on plaster, colored textiles and illuminated manuscripts. Most of the examples will be drawn from text material, as these are the objects we have had the most access to for this study, although we have examples from some of the other areas as well.

Spectral Imaging of Ostraca
By analogy with ancient texts, infrared imaging of ostraca has long been employed to help improve readings. We report on extensive spectral imaging of ostraca over the visible and near infrared. Spectral imaging acquires the complete spectrum for each pixel in an image; the data can be used with an extensive set of software tools that were developed originally for satellite and scientifi c imag...
متن کاملBiometrics beyond the Visible Spectrum: Imaging Technologies and Applications
Human body images acquired at visible spectrum have inherent restrictions that hinder the performance of person recognition systems built using that kind of information (e.g. scene artefacts under varying illumination conditions). One promising approach for dealing with those limitations is using images acquired beyond the visible spectrum. This paper reviews some of the existing human body ima...

Compared with visible light (380-700 nm), near-infrared light (700-1400 nm) undergoes weaker optical attenuation in biological tissue; thus, it can penetrate deeper. Herein, we demonstrate near-infrared optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (NIR-OR-PAM) with 1046 nm illumination. A penetration depth of 3.2 mm was achieved in chicken breast tissue ex vivo using optical fluence within the A...

متن کاملSolution-processed PbS quantum dot infrared photodetectors and photovoltaics.
In contrast to traditional semiconductors, conjugated polymers provide ease of processing, low cost, physical flexibility and large area coverage. These active optoelectronic materials produce and harvest light efficiently in the visible spectrum. The same functions are required in the infrared for telecommunications (1,300-1,600 nm), thermal imaging (1,500 nm and beyond), biological imaging (t...
